Amazon remains the shopping destination for students

Amazon is an online marketplace for people to buy personal items ranging from household necessities to fashion and clothing.

Amazon offers many searches for trending items such as fashion and electronics. Popular items are sportswear, accessories and home decor.

Lululemon, a sportswear retailer, is known for its shirts, shorts, leggings, tennis skirts and joggers, as well as its high prices. Amazon offers joggers similar to Lululemon joggers but at a lower price. To continue the activewear trend, Amazon also offers a best-selling tennis skirt from the Werena store.

Not only does Amazon specialize in activewear, but they sell various accessories.

Accessories are an important part of any outfit and add personality and interest to your outfit, according to Shop Your Wardrobe. Hair clips are increasingly popular in the accessories department. They are also known as claw clips and have become popular through social media and video app, Tik Tok.

These hair clips bring back the ’90s trends that actress Jennifer Aniston used to rock, according to Vox.

“We are in the middle of a years-long feedback loop that strives to resurrect the trends of the 1990s and 2000s; colloquially, it’s called ‘Y2K fashion,'” Vox writer Terry Nguyen wrote in “The Claw Clip Returns”.

Education junior Avery Richardson is an example of college students using Amazon to find the best deals on hair clips.

A recent survey sent to Auburn college students about their favorite Amazon trends showed another popular find on Amazon: home décor. College students usually try to furnish their homes on a budget, and Amazon provides just that, like string lights, furniture, and picture frames. Amazon also provides other everyday items in its technology department.

According to Industry Today, the tech sector is the largest segment of the market, and Amazon has taken notice.

In December 2021, Good Housekeeping documented Amazon’s 50 best-selling products. The top 50 products include technologies such as the Echo Dot, video doorbells and speakers. There are also television necessities like remote controls and e-reading devices like the Kindle.

During the holiday season, Amazon featured many holiday highlights on its website. Holiday deals included cellphones and accessories, fashion, toys and beauty products. Amazon also had other categories like price, sports, and cookware.

Amazon’s page featured a Black Friday Early Sale for additional discounts and a section specifically for holiday home decor. Its homepage serves as a guide to finding the perfect gift as it offers different tabs for each gift category.

“Amazon is a great company because they have a great product line, great shipping, and great customer service,” said first-year kinesiology student Abby Anderson.

While college students often turn to Amazon for shopping, it’s also impacting local businesses.

Wrapsody is a gift shop in downtown Auburn. This business benefits from Amazon because it receives office supplies such as binders and safety pins from the company.

“It’s quite beneficial in terms of usage,” said Hannah Way, website manager at Wrapsody.

She went on to say that Amazon has fast delivery, large inventory, and good prices.

On the other hand, many local businesses are impacted by Amazon due to the competition it poses. Crystal Tomasello owns the local Well Red bookstore and cafe. She explained that Amazon offers good prices for books, so many people buy their reading materials there.

“As an independent bookstore, you definitely have to compete for books,” Tomasello said.

Despite the competition, Well Red still uses Amazon when purchasing baked goods such as muffin tins and spices.
