America Designates Boeing Research and Technology as the Winner of a Directed Project Opportunity on the Generation of Authorized Additive Materials for the Ti-6AI-4V (GAMAT) funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL ), Materials and Manufacturing Branch, Manufacturing and Industry Core Technology Division.

Driven by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), America Makes awarded approximately $3.0 million in funding with approximately $0.8 million in matching funds from the award-winning project team for a total of approximately $3.8 million.

Subject to the finalization of all contractual details and requirements, Boeing Research and Technology will work in conjunction with RPMI Innovations, Edison Welding Institute (EWI), Auburn University, ASTM International and University of Texas El Paso to achieve the goals of the overall effort. In addition, the National Institute of Aeronautical Research (NIAR), working concurrently on Project 5511JMADD, will coordinate and support the Boeing Project Team in the review and documentation of data generated under Project GAMAT.

The goal of the GAMAT-led project opportunity is to overcome the lack of accepted and available design data for use by engineers and designers for approval of additive manufacturing (AM) parts. Generating the required data and models involves a significant investment of resources and time in order to produce statistically significant data, which requires generating test coupons in a controlled process, performing tests, and testing. analyze the resulting data.

“While there are organization or company proprietary AM design databases, there is currently very little industry or government accepted standard design data for AM in the public domain,” said John Wilczynski, executive director of America Makes. “This data is needed to further shape and support the wider adoption of AM.”

“It’s exciting to see when a call for projects comes full circle and our members come up with insightful and impactful proposals that ultimately have the ability to advance the dataset of the additive manufacturing ecosystem,” said- he declared. “Our calls for projects are a way for members to accelerate AM technologies and innovation in manufacturing and beyond.”

In its ongoing efforts to support the transformation of manufacturing in the United States through innovative and coordinated AM, 3D printing technology development, and workforce training and development, America Makes offers two additional project calls to provide members with the possibility of $1.75 million in funding. price.

AMERICA CALLS FOR RAPID INNOVATION (RIC) 2022

The 2022 Rapid Innovation Call focuses on advancing AM technologies that meet the needs of all members. The NCDMM invites competitive proposals supporting America Makes mission to promote and accelerate the development and deployment of innovative, cost-effective, and energy-efficient AM technologies to meet defense and/or commercial needs. Submitted topics are reviewed and prioritized by the America Makes Roadmap Advisory Group.

The funding source for this call is America Makes through AFRL, with a projected value of $400,000. A minimum of four awards are anticipated with an associated maximum federal funding of $100,000 available for each award.

This funding opportunity aims to meet the needs of members in five thematic areas. Execution of America Makes-funded projects and programs meets roadmap requirements, which are in turn identified by members, and drive advancement in AM technology readiness and industrialization. The continued engagement and participation of members in working groups, advisory groups, and workshops is essential to the value of the roadmap and to depicting the impact of America Makes-funded activities. This call for rapid innovation aligns with various requirements spanning design, process, materials, value chain and AM genome corridors.

For each project, teams must provide deliverables to the appropriate AFRL Transition Partners and America Makes for distribution to members through the digital storefront.
