Canton holds competition for new veterans’ memorial

CANTON, Mo. (WGEM) – The city of Canton is seeking help to honor the nation’s veterans with a new memorial planned for Veterans Memorial Park.

The park is at the intersection of Brose and Wyaconda Avenues southeast of downtown Canton.

The project is a coordinated effort between the City of Canton, the city’s parks board and the Canton Community Betterment Group, with the latter awarding a $250 gift card or scholarship to the contest winner(s).

Former mayor and current volunteer Joe Clark says the prize is an added incentive to motivate more people to participate.

“Maybe students, whether at the high school level or at the college level. $250, I know, isn’t a lot of money, but for a struggling student, it can be pretty good pocket change,” Clark said.

Clark said the contest is open to everyone and can be submitted by a single person or a group.

He said he was excited to see what designs would result from the competition.

“It’s open to anyone and everyone, no matter how old they are, how old they are, where they live or anything like that. Good design is good design no matter where it comes from, and we hope to get some good ones,” Clark said.

There are several rules for designs, including:

  • The size of the memorial footprint should not exceed 100 square feet
  • Construction cost should not exceed $10,000…with estimated labor and material costs/budgets included in design proposal
  • Fundraising suggestions should be included in the proposal
  • The design will ultimately belong to the city, which will have the final say on the location of the memorial in the park.
  • Proposals must include a cover sheet with the names and contact details of the designer(s)

Submissions may be submitted in hard copy to Canton City Hall at 400 Lewis St., Canton, MO, 63435, in person or by mail.

Electronic submissions can be sent to [email protected] and must be in .pdf format.

All submissions are due by 5 p.m. March 31
