CRGE students have fun in the Pie Smashing contest; Collecting dollars for charity

Washougal, WA – What could be more fun for the students of Columbia River Gorge Elementary (CRGE) than participating in the Kids Heart Challenge which combines learning from their hearts while helping others by raising funds for the American Heart Association? It would be to see a broken pie in the face of their main favorite, Tracey MacLauchlan!

“Students and families have worked hard to raise over $ 4,000 to help support the work of AHA,” said Jessica Warta, CRGE PE teacher, who organized the fundraiser. “The students are extremely excited to be able to meet Principal MacLachlan and take pride in their efforts to do good in the world and help others who are less fortunate.

Students registered online and took on healthy challenges like a commitment to be kind, move more, or choose water. Students raised money online or by interviewing family and friends in person, while learning about their physical and emotional well-being.

“In PE, students learned why water is a better choice to drink than other sugary drink options along with fun facts about the heart,” Warta said. “Students could win prizes or thank you gifts for the amount of money they raised. “

Any student who participated in the fundraiser or the challenges were eligible for school-wide prizes. For every $ 1,000 raised by CRGE, a staff member volunteered to be tricked. The first grader, Jase Kenyon, was drawn from among all the participants and was the lucky winner of the Pie to Director MacLachlan on May 21. Other face pies were received by Warta and CRGE Kindergarten teacher Mandy Bradford. A staff member, yet to be determined, will be slimmed down in early June!
