IndieWire is presenting a staple of the Emmy Awards season, our Awards Spotlight Series, starting today. The video series is presented by Disney +.
IndieWire TV Awards Editor-in-Chief Libby Hill and IndieWire critic and Associate TV Editor Ben Travers have connected with some of this season’s most exciting talent – as compiled and edited by the producer IndieWire Creative Leo Garcia – to discuss their process and artistry as reflected in the 2020-2021 television season.
Among the talents featured are Oscar winner Kate Winslet, who returned to HBO in the limited series “Mare of Easttown” a decade after her Emmy success in “Mildred Pierce”; the eponymous Bodega Boys of Showtime’s “Desus & Mero”; John Boyega in Amazon Video’s “Small Ax”; Kathryn Hahn in Disney + ‘s “WandaVision”; Elisabeth Moss in “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Hulu and Katori Hall for the cultivation and conservation of her strip club, a stone cold classic, “P-Valley” by Starz. IndieWire will unveil more than 15 exclusive interviews starting June 1 and ending the Emmy nominations voting period on June 28.
For the second year in a row, the filming of Emmy Awards Spotlight took place not in PMC’s state-of-the-art studio, but in the comfort of the subjects’ homes, as pandemic safety measures remain our top priority. The isolated year seems to have only made the participants more comfortable with the medium, resulting in an even more open and honest conversation about the artists and their art.
As things return to a new version of normal, there’s no way to overstate how important popular culture has been in guiding people over the past few months. The 2020-2021 eligibility window was fully included in the pandemic lifecycle, from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. And as vaccines are distributed and herd immunity increasingly appears to be an issue. complete chimera, the industry and the world strive, hoping that every day will be a better day. In the meantime, there is TV and there is a lot of it. And it was good.
