JHS FFA Members Participate in Competitions | New

JOPPA, Ill. – Members of Joppa Future Farmers of America recently entered the FFA Section 25 Farm Mechanics Competition at Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg.

There were five areas of mechanics in the competition.

Welding consisted of a flat weld connecting two pieces together, with a written exam.

Farm horsepower was a little engine diagnostic, parts identification and examination.

Surveying consists of using a level to find the angles of landmarks and slope, with an examination.

The joinery area required finding the correct angle for a rafter, tool identification and examination.

The electrical part required the competitor to wire a light switch or socket, tool identification and an examination.

The team members and their placements are: Jaxon Mitchell, fifth place in electrical; Brody Greer, second under construction; Sky Keeling, first place in surveying; Ava Stephens, eighth in welding; and Gunner Johnson, ninth in agricultural power. The team placed fourth in the Virtual District 5 horticulture competition hosted by SIU Carbondale on April 16. The team members are Cadence Mescher, Jordyn VanMeter, Hannah Wilkins, Stephens and Keeling.

In February, two members won the FFA Section 25 Competence Award. Greer was the first in the field of agricultural processing and qualified for the district competition. Bryan Walquist ranked second in grain production.
