PREVIEW: Women’s soccer hosts two major America East competitions

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women’s soccer team will be back on the field this Thursday, Oct. 13, when they host the UMass Lowell River Hawks at 6 p.m. before hosting Binghamton on Sunday, Oct. 16. The kick off for the senior day is set for 12:00.

The series

Since 2013, the Black Bears are 6-3-0 against UML. Maine won six straight games from 2013 to 2018.

Since 2005, the Black Bears are 4-8-2 against BU. Last year’s game ended in a double scoreless overtime loss.

Notes and Notables on Black Bears

  • The flagship is looking to return to the playoffs for the 14the times in the past 20 seasons. Maine is run by four seniors and eight graduate students.
  • Maine is 3-0-2 in America East with a win over Vermont last Sunday. Abby Kramer scored the winning goal, while Emma Donovan helped on the winner of the match. Kraemer scored two in the game, while Emma Schneider scored his first career goal as a Black Bear.
  • Point of Birte (player of the week), Madison Michaud (rookie of the week), Halle Rogers (Defensive Player of the Week) and Jordane Pinette (Rookie of the Week) all won awards in the first two months.
  • Second year Abby Kramer led the Black Bears in points during the 2021 season with a total of 11 during his rookie campaign. Graduate student Emma Donovan and junior Delaney LaBonte each scored two goals last season.

A bit about river hawks

  • UML is coming off an 8-6-3 season, which saw them fall in the first round of the America East tournament against the University of New Hampshire in a shootout.
  • Four of the River Hawks’ top five scorers – Anna Edson, Calliste Brookshire, Julie Edholm and Chloe Layne – from 2021 return in 2022.
  • Taylor Burgess returns to UML after scoring nine goals and posting a 1.76 GAA and .712 save percentage last season.

A little about the Bearcats

  • BU is coming off an 8-8-3 season, which saw them fall in the first round of the America East tournament against the University of Albany, 2-0.
  • Four of the Bearcats’ top five scorers — Maya Anand, Olivia McKnight, Victoria McKnight and Peyton Gilmore — from 2021 return in 2022.
  • Binghamton does not fire a goaltender who has participated in a game.
