Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo to challenge West Bengal indirect vote: Mamata Banerjee

Former Union ministers Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo will take part in the upcoming West Bengal polls for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Sunday. While Sinha will fight the Lok Sabha by-election in Asansol, Supriyo has been selected to contest the Ballygunje Assembly by-elections.

“Happy to announce on behalf of All India Trinamool Congress that Sri Shatrughan Sinha, Former Union Minister and Famous Actor, will be our candidate for the Loksabha By-Election in Asansol,” Banerjee tweeted. “Sri Babul Supriyo, a former labor minister and renowned singer, will be our candidate in the Vidhansabha by-election in Ballygunge. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Jai Ma-Mati-Manush!

In September, Supriyo quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the TMC two months after he was removed from his post as Union Minister of State, admitting he was disappointed with what had happened despite his “hard work and good work”.

Actor-turned-politician Sinha joined the BJP Congress ahead of the 2019 parliamentary elections. He lost from his stronghold of Patna Sahib in Bihar to BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad.

On Saturday, the electoral commission announced that by-votes for four assembly seats, including Asansol and Ballygunje, will take place on April 12.
