St. Petersburg police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Saturday night at the Skyway Plaza shopping center in southern St. Petersburg.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., police received a call from a shot in the area of 1079 62nd Ave. South.

When officers arrived, they found an “improvised boxing ring” set up behind the mall.

“It’s just a big parking lot that’s right behind the mall. And the parking lot is surrounded by a high concrete wall, so you can’t really see anything from the street behind the mall. But it’s a full-fledged boxing ring with chairs set up and a few hundred people attending this boxing match. ” said Yolanda Fernandez, spokesperson for the St. Petersburg police.

What police know so far is that an altercation broke out between two groups who had attended the boxing matches. Shots were fired and four people were injured.

A man was fatally injured and died at a local hospital. Another victim is still in critical condition.

At present, investigators continue to interview witnesses to gather more details on what exactly happened.
