Tennis drops weekend contests | Sports


The Cal State Fullerton women’s tennis team lost both competitions over the weekend to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara at the Titan tennis courts.

In the game against Cal Poly SLO on April 16, Titans Natalie Duffy and YuSeung Suh started the doubles with a 6-2 loss to Pomona’s Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette. The following match, Eira Tobrand and Camila Garcia came back and won the doubles, 6-3, while Juliette Daires and Kaytlin Taylor suffered a 6-4 loss to Laura Bente and Peyton Dunkie.

Cal Poly SLO took an early lead 3-0, with Peyton Dunkle beating Taylor in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, while Delanie Dunkle beat Garcia in straight sets at 6-3 apiece.

However, Fullerton responded as Tobrand gained momentum for the Titans with a win over LaMette in sets of 7-6, 8-0, 6-3. Daries followed that up with a victory over Ackerman in sets of 7-5, 6-4. It made it 3-2, helping Fullerton make a comeback before they disappeared.

The Titans’ momentum quickly faded once Pomona regained their grip as Kim Bhunu beat Suh in sets 6-2, 6-7, (0-3), and 6-3.

With Cal Poly SLO 4-2, Duffy and Laura Bente’s singles match went unfinished, resulting in a loss for Fullerton.

After a week of losing at home to University of Arizona on April 15 and Cal Poly SLO on April 16, they were swept by UC Santa Barbara, 4-0, on Sunday.

In two doubles matches, Suh and Duffy lost to Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter 6-2, while Daires and Taylor also lost, 6-2, to Camille Kiss and Marta Gonzalez Ballbe. Tobrand and Garcia’s doubles match was unfinished, giving Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead.

To start the singles match, Daires fell to Honer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Later, Suh fell to Shakhnoza Khatamova of Santa Barbara with a 6-2 first set and a 6-3 second set. Nikitash also fell in singles with a straight-set loss to the Santa Barbara Reuter at 6-3 in each set.

The singles matches of Duffy, Tobrand and Garcia remained unfinished and as a result Santa Barbara won 6-0.

Fullerton will face UC Irvine at Titan Tennis Courts on April 24 at 11 a.m. in the final match of the season.
