Local high school students can put their artistic talents to good use by entering a contest to design the logo for the 2022 Laurel Memorial Run and Walk.
The person who designs the winning artwork will receive a $100 gift card for a business of their choice.
Laurel Run was started in 1997 by Wayne and Elaine Hotelling of Silver Creek. The annual event is named in honor of their eldest daughter. Laurel, who died in 2017, suffered from Down Syndrome, and the Laurel Memorial Run/Walk aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the accomplishments of people with Down Syndrome and other types of disabilities. The Hotellings have dedicated the Laurel Memorial Run and Walk to Laurel and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who receive support from the Resource Center.
The Laurel Memorial Run and Walk raises money for Filling the Gap, Inc., which works with the resource center to support people with disabilities and their families in Chautauqua County.
The logo contest is open to high school students in Chautauqua County. Design entries should not be too complex, as the design should reproduce well on a t-shirt. Artists are also encouraged to submit original creations, rather than using artwork they find on the internet or through other sources.
Designs must be received no later than Monday, April 25. Internal voting at the Resource Center and Bridging the Gap will identify the finalists. The public will then have the opportunity to vote online to help determine the winning design.
Designs should be submitted to: Laurel Run Logo Contest, c/o Filling the Gap, 92 Fairmount Avenue, Jamestown, NY, 14701. Designs may also be submitted electronically to [email protected] All entries become the property of Filling the Gap.
The 26th Annual Laurel Memorial Run/Walk is scheduled for July 15-16. The traditional relay race from Jamestown to Dunkirk will take place on Friday 16 July.
The next morning at Silver Creek there will be an 8k run, 5k walk, 1k fun walk, kids runs and “Laurel’s Memorial Ride” (for anyone with a disability). Some of these activities may need to be adjusted depending on the state of the pandemic.
