ST. MARYS — The Mindfulness Holistic Wellness and Healing Student Art Competition will begin voting on May 2.
Mindfulness Holistic Wellness and Healing is located in St Marys and provides mental health services and therapy solutions to individuals, families and couples in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The mental health department launched the competition in late March and reached out to area schools to have students participate in the art competition. Pupils from St Marys, Paden City, Doddridge, Ritchie and Williamstown secondary schools will take part in the competition.
“We wanted to give something back to the community and give students a way to express themselves through art,” said marketer Jon Burgess. “As a mental health agency, we see people expressing themselves in many ways and art is one of them. We have an art gallery that our patients and the public can view, and we wanted to open it up for students in our communities to show off their talents and express themselves.
Burgess said he wanted to limit foot traffic on each school’s voting nights and restricted access to parents or supporters of that school. He said that at Open House Voting Night, everyone is welcome to the event, which will include drinks, door prizes and open voting for anyone to vote on paintings.
Burgess said they plan to continue this event for years to come, but hope to have more participating schools in the future.
Voting will take place at the Mindfulness Holistic Wellness & Healing building at 210 Second Street in St Marys. The grand prize for the student who achieves first place will receive $300, while their school will receive $200. The second-placed student will receive $200, while their school will receive $100. The third-placed student will receive $100, while their school will receive $50. The first winner from each school will receive $50.
There will be six voting nights which will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The voting dates are as follows:
* May 2: St Marys voting night.
* May 3: Election evening in Paden City.
* May 9: Evening of vote of Doddridge.
* May 10: Ritchie voting evening.
