Westborough Lions hold youth peace poster and speech contests

WESTBOROUGH — The Westborough Lions Club is once again holding its annual Peace Poster Contest for middle school students and its Speech Contest for high school youth.

Westborough has produced state-level winners in both contests in recent years.

The Peace Poster Contest is designed for students aged 11-13 to express their vision of peace and inspire the world through their art and creativity. The theme for this year’s poster is “Leading with Compassion”. Each poster will be judged on three criteria: artistic merit, originality and expression of the theme.

There are four levels of competition – local, district, state and international. Monetary rewards will be given at each level.

The deadline to enter the Westborough contest is Friday, October 14. The winner will be selected by Saturday November 5th. All entries will be posted at the Westborough Public Library the week of November 1st. The Youth Speech Contest will take place on Tuesday, November 29. It is designed for secondary school students residing in Westborough to provide them with a platform to hone their public speaking skills.

Each student will give a 5 to 8 minute speech on this year’s theme: “Environmental crisis: fact or fiction?” There are five levels of competition – local, zone, region, district and state, with cash prizes at each level, culminating in a $1,000 district-level prize and a $1,500 student prize. chosen as the “best in the state”. Three judges will evaluate each speech on delivery, effectiveness and text.
