What is the best day to book a flight? Here’s what Expedia says

Travelers looking to save a few dollars on flights this year should know what day they are booking their tickets, according to new data from Expedia.

You can save an average of 15% if you book an international flight on a Sunday rather than a Friday, the online travel group notes in its recently released 2023 Air Travel Hacks report in partnership with the Airlines Reporting Corporation.

For domestic flights, these savings average around 5%. The two companies analyzed average round-trip ticket prices for flights from the United States during the first eight months of this year.

If you were already familiar with the Sunday hack, know that it has actually become more lucrative this year. “While the best day of the week to book has been Sunday for four years, travelers saved 5% more on average in 2022 compared to 2021,” the report notes.

Expedia also recommends booking domestic flights at least a month in advance – or six months for international flights – to save 10% on average. The “sweet spot” for domestic flying, in particular, is between 28 and 35 days before you depart, according to the report.

Overall, the folks at Expedia are urging travelers to be careful not to book flights (or from airports) at the last minute. Planning ahead not only saves valuable time, but also money. You can read the full report on Expedia’s blog here.
